GURUGRAM: MCG is planning to set up three facilities for processing construction and demolition (C&D) waste across the city. “Deliberations on the matter have just started and we are likely to have these plants operational before the next monsoons,” a senior MCG official said. A large-scale plant with a 2,000 tonnes per day (TPD) capacity is proposed near the Global City project.
The second facility, planned at the Bandhwari landfill site where approximately 12 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of legacy waste exists, will have a 400-500 TPD capacity.
The third facility with a 500 TPD capacity is slated for Begumpur Khatola.
At a recent meeting, Haryana urban local bodies (ULB) department secretary and commissioner Vikas Gupta instructed MCG officials to develop a detailed strategy for C&D waste management, suggesting “the plan should include specific activities and precise timelines for implementation”. At the meeting, discussions centred on MCG’s plans to process waste at Auto Market, Sector 10, alongside coordinating with various agencies that could utilise the crushed material. MCG received instructions to establish distinct rates and create a panel of vendors for two purposes: daily collection of C&D waste and clearing legacy construction waste from city hotspots. The civic body, however, has not yet done any fresh assessment of the construction waste lying across the city roads and public places.
TOI reported on June 5 that MCG was unsuccessful in finding an agency to handle the collection and transportation of C&D waste.
The corporation has now issued a fresh tender for the third instance to address legacy C&D waste removal.
Despite receiving proposals from three bidders in April for removing 6 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste, none met the required eligibility criteria, officials said.
MCG says daily construction waste generation in the city amounts to approximately 1,500 to 2,000 tonnes.
Currently, a single firm operates the Basai C&D waste processing facility, collecting construction waste within a 15-kilometre radius of the plant. The Basai facility can process 300 MT of construction debris daily. MCG was unsuccessful in securing a contractor to manage construction waste collection beyond this specified range. During the last financial year, MCG designated Rs 10 crore for C&D waste management in its budget.
However, it utilised only half of the allocated amount for construction waste management. For the current fiscal year, the corporation has doubled the allocation to Rs 20 crore for this purpose.
