RANCHI: The Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has intensified its crackdown on unlicensed hostels, lodges and banquet halls in the city, directing operators to obtain mandatory licences by March 15 or face strict action.

Officials warned that establishments found running without permits could be fined, sealed or face legal proceedings under the Jharkhand Municipal Act, 2011.

RMC issued directives on Sunday, asking operators of dharamshalas, marriage halls, banquet halls, lodges and hostels to obtain licences and ensure compliance with prescribed safety norms, building approvals and civic regulations.

RMC administrator Sushant Gaurav directed officials to ensure that all such establishments possess approved building plans, commercial holdings and trade licences. “Fire safety equipment, CCTV cameras, designated entry and exit points, and adequate parking are essential for public safety. These facilities must be ensured before any licence is granted,” he said.

The civic body also warned that hotels and banquet halls operating without designated parking spaces could be sealed.

According to RMC data from Sept 2025, only about 130 hostels are officially registered with the civic body, while the actual number is estimated to exceed 5,000.

Mangal Das, a banquet hall owner, urged the corporation to allow more time for compliance.
