MADURAI: Madurai corporation is advancing its urban management capabilities through a digital asset mapping initiative, creating a precise “asset inventory” using differential global positioning system (DGPS) technology and identifying encroachment mapping across several city zones.

This documentation of municipal infrastructure and utilities is designed to be uploaded into a central database, ensuring that every civic asset and urban utility is integrated into a unified dashboard for improved tracking and data-driven planning. The digital initiative would also reduce manual dependencies.

A property tax application has also been provided to officials through which they can upload data regarding surveys and property verification to identify violations and conduct assessments in real time for improved tax administration. The system also auto-generates a tax notice to improve operating efficiency.

Along with this physical mapping, technological upgrades are being done to the integrated command and control centre (ICCC). To further refine public service, corporation has implemented new software to modernise the web-based grievance redressal system, combining all the various grievance channels, including the new Smart Madurai app, to one page prioritised based on category and level of urgency.

The ICCC serves as the central nervous system for these digital initiatives, providing a platform for real-time monitoring and analytics across core municipal functions. One of its newest features is public health services monitoring. The ICCC has conducted a digital mapping of all primary health care centres within the Madurai corporation limits, with details regarding the administrative framework and the healthcare infrastructure available. The system also maps the areas, based on available data, around the PHCs to identify vulnerable pockets such as slum areas or high-risk habitations, integrating that information into a central dashboard as well.A senior official from the corporation revenue department said that the centralised dashboard and simple application based data entry processes made entering information regarding property verifications and violations much simpler. “A lot of the formatting and paperwork that we used to do to file and send notices is being done for us automatically with the app, making the field officials more efficient.” The official added that since all the information was available in one website they was no need to search for information, and it also reduced the possibility of errors or redundancies.

“Through this centralised digital framework, Madurai corporation is reducing manual dependencies and accelerating its evolution into a technologically resilient smart city,” said R Nandakishore, a senior developer working to integrate these advanced functionalities into a webpage for efficient management from the Corporation.

Additionally, the ICCC also monitors GPS tracking for garbage collection vehicles, providing visibility into vehicle movement and distance travelled, allowing for the detection of operational gaps and deploying vehicles and manpower to address those issues.

For the city’s lighting, API-based integration provides centralised visibility of streetlight status, enabling officials to identify non-functioning lights in real time and improve maintenance efficiency.
